Academic Career

My seven years as a professor at liberal arts colleges gave me extensive academic experience. Teaching Russian language and literature at all levels, publishing and giving conference papers on Russian and American literature, and reviewing articles for journals in my field have all informed my knowledge of writing and publishing. Perhaps my greatest strength as an editor is my ability to critique analyses and suggest improvements in argumentation and organization. My knowledge of grammar and foreign languages (Russian, German, and French) have made me a discerning editor with a deep understanding of grammar and ESL issues.

Past Academic affiliations:
Assistant Professor of Russian, Davidson College

Visiting Assistant Professor of Russian, Williams College

Education:

PhD in Russian literature, Indiana University (topic: Pictorial Imagery in the Works of N. V. Gogol)

BA in German and Russian (double major), University of Virginia

Languages:

Russian, German: near-native speaking and reading abilities

French: good speaking and reading abilities

Additional experience translating and abstracting:

Four years' experience abstracting Russian-language history and political science journals and translating (Russian and German to English).

Proofreading/Editing Experience and Qualifications

Throughout my eight years as a copyeditor of academic texts for individual clients, university presses, journals, and editing agencies, I have honed my expertise in editing at all levels, from the developmental stage to the final proofreading. My specialty is academic prose (scholarly articles, monographs, anthologies, dissertations, application materials, and proposals) in a variety of fields, particularly the humanities, arts, and social sciences.

My understanding of successful academic writing, from academic standards to argumentation and style, has enabled me to assist numerous scholars in landing great positions, writing successful proposals, and making their scholarship clearer and more accessible without compromising their unique voices. My thorough knowledge of American English and the most widely used style books (Chicago and MLA, APA and Harvard-style citations) and extensive experience in editing British English (OED and Oxford Style Manual) have helped me to ensure that the manuscripts I edit meet the highest standards of precision, clarity, and consistency.

Services

I offer services at all stages of manuscript preparation, from advice on improving analysis, argumentation, and organization (developmental editing) to the final polishing stage before submission to a journal or publisher (proofreading). I am an experienced editor of academic monographs, articles for journals or anthologies, proposals, reviews, and application materials.
