I hold First Class Honours in Linguistics with French (Sussex, UK, 1984) and was awarded the Year Abroad Dissertation Prize for my thesis on 'The Role of Linguistic Interference for French Learners of English'. 

I moved from the UK to Australia in 1991 where I undertook research in computer assisted language learning (CALL) at Bond University (Gold Coast, Queensland) and tutored in linguistics for post- and undergraduates.

Whilst studying for my Master's in Education at Queensland University of Technology (QUT, 1997), I headed up the instructional design team for Australia’s first proprietary online education system. My research into online learning environments at QUT informed content for undergraduate education subjects, which I also taught. In a separate role as Research Assistant, I worked on a range of projects in teacher development.
