Completed BA in Psychology/Sociology from Southern Connecticut State College (now University) in 1974. After graduation I was a technical proofreader for Saybrook Press and worked part time for Business Week magazine at the RR Donnelley plant checking page proofs before they went to press. Early years included working for Soundings Boating Publications as head proofreader. I started my own business, Private Eyes Proofreading, 42 years ago. Clients through the years include McGraw-Hill, Houghton Mifflin, Benjamin Cummings, John Wiley, Pearson Education, and others.
Through the past 42 years, I have copy edited/proofread technical books for clients including CRC Press, Globe Pequot Press, ASQC, Pearson Education, IEEE. Besides my own business, I was associate editor for Wolfe Publishing (Rifle and Handloader magazines) for 8 years (1986–1994). I wrote magazine articles in the early 1990s–American Rifleman, Shooting Sports USA, Women and Guns, Teddy Bear Times (UK), Teddy Bear and Friends, Teddy Bear Review. For the last 20+ years I have worked freelance for Pearson Education in the Econometrics division, and other departments, through the Aardvark Group Publishing Services. I specialize in technical material–medical, healthcare, math, psychology, econometrics. I have copy edited, proofread, and occasionally checked index page entries for new editions. My specialty is finding the errors that others miss and ensuring consistency in specs, text, references, and style. Although I have worked on general interest books, my main interest is technical material. I prefer proofreading because it allows me to find others' errors. I make sure that references, style, and all elements of a book are consistent, including the fonts and style in math. I relish finding those errors so each project is as perfect as possible.
Technical proofreading, copy editing if needed, checking Index entry page numbers to new or existing editions. Ensuring that Table of Contents match pages and entries. Although this should be regarded as part of proofreading, I find many proofreaders seem to ignore basic cross checking. Proofreading is much more than just reading from the manuscript to the text, it is vital that every aspect of an article or textbook is consistent and correct.
I started my own proofreading business 42 years ago because I found a scarcity of people who took the job seriously. Errors in any book or article reflect on the author/publisher and it is up to the proofreader/copy editor to ensure that an author's style and flavor is not changed, but that the text is correct and clear for the reader/student. I am proud that authors who have trusted me with their books for copy editing/proofreading have been happy with my work. That is my goal.
Available as needed. I have fast turnaround, but each project is different, so contact me for scheduling. Each May, I take one week off to attend a Greyhound Gathering charity event in Utah.
